7 Autism-Friendly Places in KL & PJ

APC carousel cover: seven autism-friendly places in KL and PJ, featuring sensory spaces, inclusive play and calmer outings
A starting point for your next family outing.

A family outing can take a lot of preparation: where to park, how busy it might be, and where your child can take a break. This guide brings together seven places in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, with the details you need before setting off.

Some offer a quieter room or a more flexible activity. Others offer space to move or support autistic adults through employment. Choose the kind of outing your child enjoys, then check the access arrangements below.

Choose the support that fits your child. “Autism-friendly” does not mean every space will suit every child. Prices, access arrangements and programmes can change. Check with the venue before travelling.

The Owl Quiet Zone offers a different setting from the active play area.

If you are already heading to 1 Utama, knowing where to take a break can make the trip easier to plan. The Sensory Pod at 2F Oval has sensory toys and a quieter Owl zone with tents and bean bags. The As I Am programme also includes sensory walls and the Playtime Kids inclusive playground.

Before you go: Register before visiting. Children need a parent or guardian with them.

Register before your visit

The Sensory Pod is for registered As I Am members with autism, of all ages. Children need a parent or guardian with them.

  1. Join ONECARD or ONECARD Kids+, then complete the online As I Am membership form.
  2. Upload an autism medical letter or an OKU card showing an autism diagnosis.
  3. Visit Customer Service at 2F Oval to verify your details and finish registration.

Show your child the photos before you go. They may want to explore the play area, sit somewhere quieter, or skip both. You can ask staff about access when you arrive, while there is still time to choose.

2. We Rock The Spectrum, Taman Desa

An indoor sensory gym for children who enjoy movement.

For a child who enjoys swings and movement, We Rock The Spectrum offers an indoor sensory gym where children of different abilities can play together. This listing is for the Taman Desa branch.

Before you go: A parent or guardian must stay throughout open play. Adults need socks; call ahead because private bookings can affect access.

More visiting details
  • Address: G1, Wisma Miramas, No. 1, Jalan 2/109E, Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur.
  • Open-play price: RM48 per child; RM41 for each sibling.
  • Hours: Daily, 10am to 6pm. Private bookings and birthday parties can affect availability.

Bring socks and stay with your child

A parent or guardian must accompany their child throughout open play. Shoes stay off the gym floor, and adults must wear socks.

Call 010-939 5711 before setting off, especially if you need a quieter time. Ask whether a party is booked and how busy your preferred session is likely to be. Once inside, let your child start with an activity that catches their interest; there is no need to try every piece of equipment.

3. GSC IOI Mall Damansara

A cinema session with lower sound and dimmed lighting.

A regular cinema screening can involve loud sound, darkness and a long wait before the film begins. GSC’s sensory-friendly sessions have lower sound, lights left on at a dimmed level, and no advertisements or trailers. Guests can move around during the movie.

Before you go: Book a session labelled sensory-friendly. Bring socks; the playground is for ages 3 to 12. Children who need support must remain accompanied.

More visiting details
  • Cinema: GSC IOI Mall Damansara, Petaling Jaya, formerly Tropicana Gardens Mall.
  • Ticket price: RM9 for sensory-friendly screenings.
  • When: The second Sunday of each month. Check the film and available session before booking.

Prepare for a first cinema visit

Choose a session explicitly labelled sensory-friendly. GSC’s cinema social story shows what to expect and may help your child prepare.

Bring socks for the lounge and hall. The playground is for children aged 3 to 12, according to GSC’s sensory-friendly screening guidelines. Comfort items such as fidgets and blankets are welcome, and guests with special dietary needs may bring snacks from home. Children who need support must remain accompanied and supervised.

This branch has a nursery or safe room. Ask staff where it is before the film starts. If your child has had enough after a short time, leaving early is still an option.

4. Sunway Putra Mall

Calm Rooms for a break during your shopping trip.

Sunway Putra Mall has Calm Rooms on the Lower Ground floor and Level 3, along with sensory walls through its AUTSOME initiative. These give families a place to step away from the shopping areas.

Before you go: Contact Customer Care before travelling to confirm registration and room access.

More visiting details

  • Calm Room hours: Daily, 10am to 10pm.
  • Access: Registration is required. Contact Customer Care on 03-2786 9333.

Find the room before you need a break

Ask Customer Care how to register, where to collect access, and which room is nearest to your planned stop. If you are visiting for Tuesday AUTSOME shopping privileges, check the current parking and participating-outlet arrangements too.

The photo can help you talk through the space with your child. If particular lights, sounds or scents are uncomfortable for them, ask about those before entering. You can also locate the nearest exit early in the trip, so leaving does not become another thing to work out under pressure.

5. TOY8, The Gardens Mall

Space to explore, climb and play at The Gardens Mall.

TOY8’s playground at The Gardens Mall has room for exploring and active play. The colourful tunnel and climbing dome in the photo can help your child picture the visit before arriving.

Before you go: Stay with your child. Children need anti-slip socks and adults need regular socks. Weekend and public-holiday prices are higher.

More visiting details
  • Location: T-216C, Level 3, The Gardens Mall, Kuala Lumpur.
  • 90-minute weekday admission: RM38 per child and RM15 per adult.

Budget for adults as well as children

For one paying child and one adult, a 90-minute session comes to RM53 on weekdays or RM66 on weekends and public holidays.

Children need anti-slip socks; adults can wear regular socks. Stay with your child during the play session. Before buying tickets, ask about opening hours, likely crowd levels and whether you can step out for a break and return.

If you are using e-hailing, TOY8 recommends The Gardens Mall Riverview Entrance. Developmental support services are booked separately from a playground visit.

6. Sunway Velocity Mall

Choose an open Calm Pod or ask about an enclosed room.

Tuesday shopping privileges run from 10am to 5pm, except public holidays, and include reserved parking at B2. Ask the concierge about Calm Room availability and entry arrangements.

Call 03-2786 3970 for help planning your route. Nearby rail stops include Maluri LRT and Maluri or Cochrane MRT.

If your child needs privacy, ask about the enclosed room. If they prefer to stay near the shopping area, a pod may be worth looking at first.

7. YL’s Gelateria, Damansara Utama

A gelato stop that supports employment for autistic adults.

YL’s Gelateria in Damansara Utama is a family-owned gelato business that provides employment opportunities for people with disabilities, particularly autistic adults. A visit offers a way to support inclusion beyond childhood while enjoying a café stop together.

Before you go: Ask about seating, quieter times and allergens before visiting. This is an inclusive employer; a dedicated quiet room is not confirmed.

More visiting details

Address: 35, Jalan SS21/60, Damansara Utama, Petaling Jaya.

Keep the café stop as simple as you need

Call 011-1186 6625 to check opening hours, seating and quieter visiting times. If your child has dietary needs, ask about ingredients and allergens before ordering.

You could start with a takeaway rather than a sit-down visit. For a child who likes knowing the sequence, explain it beforehand: go in, choose a flavour, pay, then leave or find a seat.

YL’s inclusion work focuses on employment. If your child needs a quiet space during an outing, ask about the café environment rather than assuming it has the same facilities as the malls above.

Before you head out

A short visit can still be a worthwhile outing. You do not need to stay longer simply because you planned to.
